*Applause* Well said, Mercia! Everyone’s appearance is unique – even that of identical twins. It’s tragic that girls as young as 13 are convinced they need breast implants, nose jobs and liposuction to “pass”. It’s ironic that as we challenge cultural stereotypes more than ever before, there is a parallel trend to reinforce them cosmetically. If you are a natal XY male looking to transition to female who would like breasts you’re seen as a freak; if you’re 19 and want 40EE implants to work in the porn industry, that’s a valid career move! X

hi mercia,my name is kiera and i am a very keen reader of uk angels forums,although i joined awhile past i have lost my password so i just read the forum and while i do find alot of good chat and advice,this doesnt always the case.i find your writings very good with some good advice,i am a transsexual and i have started rle ayear on the first of august,had a bit of a bad start as i end up in hospital on the 1 september, i contacted a flesh eating infection and was in hospital for 6 weeks,i am not handling the rle very well ,as a neighbour started giving me hassle everytime i went out dressed and so i have really went back into myself,all the best kiera

Only you can decide whether to come out, even in the 21st century there is a lot of cost in doing so and once you come out it is hard to put that genie back into the bottle again. So talk to others in your situation on the internet (hiding your identity of course so that you do not come out accidentally) and then weigh up the options. Coming out is generally not necessary if you are happy to compartmentalise your life, being one thing in one part of your life, and another thing as your public persona. It is not always easy to maintain a double life (think Peter Parker in Spiderman 2), so you will have to decide which you want to do. Personally, I tried the double life approach and it did not work for me, but for many it is the most sensible option. But only you can decide what is the most sensible option for you. Thank you for that Robyn, yes I am in what I think is a happier place, namely the United Kingdom, where trans employment rights have improved greatly in the last decade, although rights and actual practice are often far apart. I am an ex-academic now back at university to train as a nurse. We also have reasonable safety nets in our welfare system, so that there is greater possibilities to avoid prostitution, but that does not stop me being concerned at those who stop at preventing certain groups getting into sex work, and forget those left behind in danger. I live in Manchester city centre, two minutes walk from the Gay Village, so these are my near neighbours I am thinking of. I posted the above piece because I felt that Ebony, Duanna and Leeneshiaare’s stories were being hijacked for another cause. As the US Catholic theologian David Tracy wrote, there is no greater oppression than to rob the oppressed of their own story of their own suffering. Employment opportunities for all are important but as the economy worsens, more and more of us will find ourselves out of jobs, prostitution will increase on our internet’s, streets and in our brothels.
It is time that this country wakes up to the human rights of sex workers of all genders and colors. It is time the police in Memphis are made accountable for their actions, and its time to look closer at law enforcements efforts to protect transgender person’s no matter what their occupation.
Sex work is a job in this country legal and illegal. It is time to end prohibition so we can begin to fight for the rights of these workers. Sometimes it is impossible to find a better job or higher paying then sex work.
The decriminalization of prostitution is the first step to ending discrimination of sex workers. We will remember Ebony, Duanna and Leeneshiaare and we will be proud that they lived their lives trying to do what was right for them.

I don’t think we’ll ever really know the full extent of the role transgendered people played in the riot, as you say gay and trans were lumped together and some say “drag queen” while another states it was a lesbian whose action provided the spark.

very educational post! can relate to transgender issues, even if im lesbian, because of a lot of transgender friends that i have, who share their problems – mostly internal discrimination from the lgbt community
